italy 4As a Mountain Partnership Goodwill Ambassador, His Holiness atended the High-Level Conference on Mountains and the Mountain Partnership General Assembly at the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Rome from December 11-13, 2017. FAO is an agency of the United Nations (UN).

The purpose of the gathering was to celebrate the International Mountain Day and to recognize the 15th anniversary of the Mountain Partnership. The opening of the High-Level Segment of International Mountain Day was hosted by Dr. Thomas Hofer, the Coordinator of the Mountain Partnership Secretariat. Maria Helena Semedo, Deputy Director of FAO provided welcoming and opening remarks. Representatives of the Governments of Italy and Switzerland, who were also hosts and sponsors of International Mountain Day and the Mountain Partnership, also made substantive addresses. Andrew Taber, the Chairperson of the Mountain Partnership Steering Committee and the Executive Director of the Mountain Institute in Washington D.C. provided an overview of the accomplishments and challenges of the Mountain Partnership. Rome 3 His Holiness  in his remarks stated that: “ As I travel [around the world], it is increasingly clear that our mountain environments and mountain people are under threat. Mountain ecosystems and the way of life of people who live in mountains regions are under significant stress. This stress comes from multiple forces. Climate change, urbanization, globalization, deforestation, mineral extraction, and loss of biodiversity and wildlife are now impacting mountain environments and communities at an accelerating rate."

Rome 4 His Holiness then offered his full support to the activities of the Mountain Partnership and pledged to continue his work as Mountain Partnership Ambassador as he travels. Further, His Holiness called on the Mountain Partnership to reach out to more religious and spiritual leaders to become involved in mountain issues. His Holiness indicated that “mountains [are] sacred and inspirational spaces” that are “important parts of our human heritage that are in danger of being lost. Religious and spiritual leaders can play an important role in protecting our main environments and cultures.” He therefore concluded “a concerted effort from the Mountain Partnership to involve more religious and spiritual leaders would be highly beneficial.”Rome 1

The Mountain Partnership General Assembly meeting adapted a Framework for Action to support concrete actions, put in place long lasting processes and establish policies that strengthen the resilience of mountain peoples and environments. The Framework also aims to ensure that sustainable mountain development is integrated into the 2030 Agenda of the UN. More than 200 people attended the Mountain Partnership General Assembly from many mountain countries all around the world. Representatives of Governments, UN Agencies, NGOs and Civil Society were in attendance, along with the Mountain Partnership members.

As a part of program His Holiness visited Vatican City on December 12, 2017. Vatican City is the head quarters for the Catholic Church and is more than 1700 years old. It contains the Basilica of St. Peter, the most famous and important church for Catholics and where His Holiness the Pope lives and works. His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang met with His Eminence Cardinal Tauran, the President of the Pontifical Council on Inter-Religious Dialogue.  His Holiness and His Eminence discussed their work on inter-religious and inter-faith issues around the world. His Holiness shared a booklet he prepared summarizing his inter-religious work. At the end of the meeting, His Holiness and His Eminence agreed to work together in the future, and His Holiness presented the Cardinal with a painting of the Four Harmonious Friends and with a Tibetan khata.Italy 1

After the meeting, His Holiness was given a private tour of the Vatican City, including St. Peter’s Basilica, which is where St. Peter was buried about 2000 years ago. The Church was very large and filled with beautiful and historical paintings, statues, and important holy and historical places.

At the end of the visit, His Holiness had a special opportunity to visit the Vatican Library and to see several very old Tibetan manuscripts that the Vatican had in its collection. One of the documents was an old woodblock print of the entire Tripitaka teachings of Lord Buddha. His Holiness very much enjoyed the Library as it held a large and very old collection of books and manuscripts containing much of the wisdom of the world. We were informed that the Library contains more than 100 kilometers of books and manuscripts!Rome 5
