Gongchig Teachings at Drikung Kagyu Institute: Second Week

gong04The teaching of the Gongchig ("The Holistic Enlightened View”) by Khenchen Könchog Gyaltshen Rinpoche based on the commentary called "The Lamp of Wisdom Illumination" has now completed its second week.

This week began the presentation of the Gongchig as one hundred and ninety "vajra statements" (one hundred and fifty main statements and forty supplementary statements) divided into seven sections, that will make up the main part of the remainder of the teaching. This week the forty statements (called “forty”, but actually forty-six) of the supplement were taught. Khenchen Rinpoche explained that the vajra statements of the supplement cover all seven sections of the one hundred and fifty main statements, and are more general and easier to understand, and so were taught first.

gong02A translation of the root text for the supplementary statements, a text taught in the first week of the teaching, has been completed based on the teachings of this week. This is included as a summary of the week’s teachings.

The root texts for this teaching are unlike the Gongchig root texts that are more commonly studied, in that each vajra statement on a particular subject has two parts: a summary of the typical teaching on the subject, followed by Kyobpa Jigten Sumgön’s teaching on the subject. This is helpful for understanding the context of each vajra statement.

The teachings are progressing well, and we look forward to beginning the teaching on the main one hundred and fifty vajra statements in the third week.
