His Holiness visits Asia Society, New York

hhasiasocietyHis Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang visited the Asia Society in New York, USA on the occasion of an exhibition about Densa Thil, the monastery of Phagmo Drupa. On the 18th of February the Asia Society hosted a dinner for His Holiness and entourage during their visit of the Exhibition about Densa Thil.

hhandentourageOn Feb 19 the Drikung Lamas and Khenpos in New York performed auspicious prayers on the stage and thereafter His Holiness performed the blessings. A sand mandala was created for the exhibition, and H.H. gave an extensive speech about Densa Thil and its past and present condition.

H.H. explained that in the past Densa Thil was founded by Phagmo Drupa (1110-1170) and from there eight Kagyupa lineages such as Drikung Kagyu, Drukpa Kagyu, Taklung Kagyu, and so on originated and flourished far and wide. In 1170, when Phagmo Drupa Dorje Gyalpo passed away, it is said that a golden Vajra appeared from the heart of the cremated corpse and dissolved into the heart of Jigten Sumgon. One result of this legendary episode is his legitimization as the successor of the late Phagmo Drupa.

hhreceivingbookLater during the cultural revolution in Tibet, all the valuable statues have been scattered all over the world. His Holiness said that it is a good sign that we have now here to see at least some of the valuable statues of Densa Thil, and also at the same time in Tibet we have received permission and are now renovating and restoring Densa Thil. The Drikung Kagyu Lineage is fully responsible for this and with the valuable support from sponsors just completed the construction of a new temple at the original place based on old pictures. Just recently we have put the big Buddha statue into the main shrine of the temple. H.H. wishes that we will be able to complete the construction of this beautiful monastery.
