His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang arrived to Washington DC on the 21st of August, 2015 and was warmly received at the airport by Garchen Rinpoche and all Drikung Dharma Surya sangha.
On the auspicious morning of 23rd of August, H.H. the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang visited the new Drikung Dharma Surya temple and commenced the opening ceremony, along with Garchen Rinpoche, Lamchen Gyalpo Rinpoche, and many other khenpos and lamas.
There were several high Tibetan officials who witnessed this special occasion. The large crowd included many Venerables and people from different Buddhist traditions, nationalities, and religions, and they all joined for this auspicious event.
Everyone chanted the Eight Auspicious Prayers joyously in front of the Drikung Dharma Surya temple. H.H. and Garchen Rinpoche cut the ribbon and everyone followed the lamas inside the shrine hall where H.H. lit the butter lamp and offered kata to the Shakymuni Buddha statue.
After H.H. sat on the throne, Garchen Rinpoche, Khenpo Samdup and the DDSC board members prepared the formal mandala offerings of the Buddha statue, dharma texts and stupa to H.H. Khenpo Samdup presented the program and the DDSC president, Mr. Quang Bui, gave a short history of the Drikung Dharma Surya center. The sangha and guests chanted Lama Chopa together in harmony.
After Lama Chopa, H.H. briefly mentioned Garchen Rinpoche’s history and acknowledged his tireless work to spread the Buddha dharma in the 21st century. H.H. also spoke about the Shravasti Buddhist Cultural Assembly Project that is coming up in November 3rdto 7th, 2015 in India.
Garchen Rinpoche then shared the story that it was H.H. who was the former 34th throne holder Drikung Kyabgon Zhiwe Lodro at the time, who recognized and enthroned GR when he was 7 years old. Then many years later GR came to India to meet the current H.H. the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang and at that time GR thought he saw Lord Jigten Sumgon! GR mentioned he has Buddha relics to be consecrated in the main Shakyamuni statue. Everyone had a wonderful time. The program ended witheveryone offered kata to Holiness and the Rinpoches and received blessings from all the lamas.
