His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang's Birthday Celebration

July 23 was the birthday of His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang, and also the day of Dharma Chakra Pravartan, the anniversary of the First Turning of the Wheel of Dharma by the Buddha.

This important anniversary in the history of Buddhism marks the day at which Lord Buddha gave his first teaching to his disciples 2500 years ago.

On this special day Guru Puja and Long Life Prayer for His Holiness were performed at Jangchubling Monastery in Dehradun from early morning in celebration of the birthday of His Holiness. At 6 AM all Rinpoches and lamas offered scarfs, and thereafter all the lay people who came for the puja offered scarfs on the throne of His Holiness. A mandala offering was made as a symbol of requesting His Holiness to live a long life and remain with us for the benefit of all sentient beings. Members of the Youth Committee from Dekyiling Settlement and representatives, and the two finalist teams of the tournament of H.H. Birthday Cup also came to join the puja and function. Special fried rice and butter tea was served for all during the puja.

At 8 AM breakfast was served for all, and the plantation program started. Around 250 flowering trees and many herbs were planted around Jangchubling Monastery and in the near by area for the long life of His Holiness and for world peace. Meanwhile, the little monks of Jangchubling had just completed the construction of a lily pond wishing His Holiness Happy Birthday and green peace for the world. Ms. Adelyn Lim from Malaysia kindly sponsored this project through her ROLF (Rainbow of Life Forces) community initiative project. It was actually a long held vision of His Holiness to make a small garden with a lily pond at the front yard of the Achi Temple at the Monastery. Now it has been fully completed and we thank Ms. Adelyn Lim and ROLF Malaysia for their kind support and help.

At 10 AM little monks at the Monastery performed an entertaining game for the guests who came for His Holiness’ Birthday. It was rather amusing, and everybody was well entertained and enjoyed it tremendously. After the performances of the little monks all shared the birthday cake and tea. Ms. Konchok Yeshi Khando from Singapore sponsored the birthday cake and tea.

After lunch, the Drikung Sub Junior team and Dekyiling Under 12 played an enchanting game at the football tournament. It was 2-2 draw. Thereafter the final match was played between Dekyiling FC and Rajpur Club. Both of the teams played very good and delivered an enthralling game which Dekyiling FC won by 2-1.

The Ven. Pema Rigzin, Director of Jangchubling Monastery, offered the prize for the best player and the best discipline. The silver medal and cup for the runner-up was given to the Rajpur Club team by the newly arrived Representative of the Dalai Lama in Dharamsala, and the gold medal and cup for the winning team of Dekyiling FC was presented by the senior Representative of Dalai Lama.

At the end the senior Representative of Dalai Lama gave a speech on the account of His Holiness’ birthday and football tournament, and thereafter Lama Kinley made some concluding remarks and gave a thank you speech. He said, today we have come to the final match and everything went well, there were no problems and nobody was hurt during the tournament. Everybody was happy and enjoyed the tournament. He added that this is due to the blessing of His Holiness the Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang, and our devotion, and commitment for His Holiness. He expressed his sincere wish that His Holiness may have a long life and the Football Tournament to his honor may go on and on, and make everyone happy throughout the years.
